Horizon - Are we still evolving?

BBC 2   Horizon_evolving_small

Alice asks one of the great questions about our species: are we still evolving? There's no doubt that we're a product of millions of years of evolution. But thanks to modern technology and medicine, did we escape Darwin's law of the survival of the fittest? Alice follows a trail of clues from ancient human bones, to studies of remarkable people living in the most inhospitable parts of the planet, to the frontiers of genetic research to discover if we are still evolving - and where we might be heading.

Wild Swimming

Alice Roberts embarks on a quest to discover what lies behind the passion for wild swimming, now becoming popular in Britain. She follows in the wake of Waterlog, the classic swimming text by the late journalist and author, Roger Deakin.

Her journey takes in cavernous plunge pools, languid rivers and unfathomable underground lakes, as well as a skinny dip in a moorland pool.

The Incredible Human Journey

In 2009, Alice presented the landmark BBC2 science series, The Incredible Human Journey, about the origin of our species and the ancient colonisation of the world. She wrote the book accompanying this series, which documents her own journey and includes conversations with experts and indigenous people that she met along the way, delving into the theories behind the television series in more detail.

Coast

Alice joined the team presenting the BAFTA award winning Coast on BBC2, where she tackled topics as diverse as palaeolithic archaeology, science and technology, and art. The sixth series of Coast aired in summer 2011.

Don't Die Young

Alice has also presented two of her own series on BBC2, Dr Alice Roberts: Don’t Die Young, exploring anatomy, physiology and health issues, and she also wrote the book to accompany the series.

Extreme Archaeology

After appearing in a number of episodes of Time Team, Alice went on to become a presenter in the spin-off series, Extreme Archaeology. In this eight-part series, a team of archaeologists – with help from top climbers, cavers and divers – investigated some unique and previously inaccessible archaeological sites throughout the UK.

Time Team

Alice Roberts first appeared on television as a bone expert on Channel 4’s archaeology series, Time Team, as well as presenting on a Time Team Live - and a follow-up Time Team special, The Big Royal Dig.

Costing The Earth

Alice Roberts has also ventured into radio, presenting Costing the Earth on Radio 4.

Car Pool

You can also see Alice Roberts being interviewed on CarPool, a weekly series where Robert Llewellyn gives a wide variety of passengers a lift in a hybrid or electric car and they talk. It's as simple as that.

The Infinite Monkey Cage

Alice featured on Radio 4's science-based comedy show The Infinite Monkey Cage along with former cosmologist Dara O'Briain, physicist Brian Cox and comedian Robin Ince for a witty, irreverant and unashamedly rational look at the world according to science.
